法是爱民的本领，即法律、轨制为的是惠及庶民。其深意为：是否变革王法、轨制，建筑什么样的王法、轨制，必须以“爱民”为依据和筹算。

　　Law Is a Means of Loving the People

　　Law being a means of loving the people suggests that laws and institutions are for the benefit of the people. It is an important guiding principle of the Legalist school. The profound significance of this is: Changing laws and institutions or establishing new ones must have  "loving the people" as its basis and aim.

　　引例  法者是以爱民也，礼者是以便事也。是以圣东谈主苟不错强国，造孽其故；苟不错利民，不循其礼。（《商君书·更法》）（标准是为了惠及庶民，礼法是为了浅易作念事。是以圣明的东谈主责罚国度，只好能使国度富强，不消复古旧的标准；只好随机故意于庶民，不消遵照旧的礼法。）

　　The law is a means of caring the people and the rites are for the convenience of doing things. Therefore, if the sage is to be able to govern the state, he does not have to follow the model of the old laws and system. As long as it is possible to benefit the people thereby, he does not have to follow the old system of rites. (The Book of Lord Shang)
